Simply Me

Do you think im crazy, do you see me as small and weak?
My disability before my ability, my barriers too bleak?
I roll up to the table, I may stutter or I stare
But I can do the job if only you would dare.
Take a chance, listen closely, I offer more than you see
I may be disabled, but I am simply me.
In public I may meltdown, I may shake or not hear
But get to know me I am strong, I work past worry and fear.
My ability is not measured by the strength of my limbs
My mouth that struggles to form a sentence
Or my ears that can’t hear all things.
My brain may storm
My illness may rage
But inside of me is the courage to ask,
No, to demand change.
My ability is overcoming, it’s getting you to understand
Together I can offer more – just give me a helping hand.
Take a chance, listen closely, I offer more than you see
I may be disabled, but I am simply me.
I am not an inspiration for living my own life
I should not be inspiring
Because I have a job, a home, a wife.
So take a chance, listen closely, I offer more than you see
I may be disabled, but I am simply me.
I may work different, or seem a little strange
But I challenge your perceptions
I want you to understand and change.
I may be disabled, but I am simply me.
